Thomas Laurence Welsh, November 8, 1932 - July 25, 2015
Thomas L. Welsh, age 82, passed on July 25 to be joyfully reunited in heaven with parents Lawrence and Anne (Pfeisinger), and best friend brother Richard. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nancy (Joblecki), children Luke (Jane), Patrick, and Margaret, grandson Ian, sister Diane Dudley, and many nieces and nephews.
Raised on Chicago's south side, Tom graduated from Leo High School in 1950. Entering the Navy in 1952, he served during the Korean War on the USS Yancey, then joined the submarine corps for duty on the Argonaut SS-475. Returning to civilian life in 1956, he became a Chicago Police Officer, serving as detective in the CPD Crime Lab. Welsh earned his PhD in pharmacy from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1963 before joining Miles Laboratories in Bedford Park, Illinois, for a distinguished 30-year career as Vice President of their Household Products Division. Tom was a key leader in the development of many well-loved products including Chalks Chewable Vitamins (the first chewable vitamins on the market), Flintstones Vitamins, One A Day Plus Iron Vitamins, Alka Seltzer Plus Cold Medicine, Alka Mints, S.O.S. Oven Cleaning Pads, and Cutter Insect Repellent. He headed the national launch of the Morningstar Farms vegetarian foods line, overseeing it's Schaumburg manufacturing plant. Tom raised his family in the Orchard Brook neighborhood of Downers Grove from the 1960s until his retirement in 1993. He then went on to live in Ft. Myers Beach and Naples, Florida. Welsh was a proud member of the United States Submarine Veterans organization.
A celebration of his life will be held August 13 at the Mt. Carmel Chapel of Saint Patrick's Residence, 1400 Brookdale Rd., Naperville, IL with visitation at 9 AM and funeral Mass at 10 AM. Military funeral honors and interment of his ashes will be held at 10 AM on August 14 at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, 20953 W. Hoff Rd., Elwood, IL.
