In Loving Memory of Grace Slack
It is with great love and remembrance that we celebrate the life of Grace Slack, a woman whose kindness, hard work, and devotion to family and community left a lasting mark on all who knew her.
Grace began her working life at just sixteen as a carhop at Richard’s Drive Inn in Evergreen Park, Illinois, where her energy and friendliness were unmistakable. In 1960 Grace was hired at Continental Assurance Company in Chicago, where she served as an IBM Biller. Her dedication earned her both a pay increase and the company’s Valuable Employee Annual Award, an early testament to her strong work ethic.
Over the years, Grace also enjoyed working as a Tupperware Demonstrator, Queens Way Clothing Demonstrator, Midwest Card Company Distributor, and an Avon Representative, blending her entrepreneurial spirit with her natural ability to connect with people.
In 1966, she joined Illinois Bell Telephone Company as a Data Processing Clerk and Tape Librarian. She later brought her talents home, working as a bookkeeper for P & G Auto Diagnostic Center in Bridgeview, Illinois. Later, she would co-found P & G Engineering with her husband, Phil Slack Sr., which later evolved into P & G Crane and P & G Fabricators. Known for her sharp mind and attention to detail, warmth, and friendliness, Grace managed the company’s bookkeeping and administrative work until her retirement in 2021 at the age of 80.
Alongside her professional accomplishments, Grace was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She served as a Room Mother and Den Mother for the Cub Scouts in Palos Park and remained active in her community as a member of the Evergreen Snowmobile Club, Chairman of the Parents Association and Fundraising Committee at Southwest Suburban Montessori School, and Decorations Chairman for the Near West Christian Women’s Club.
In 2002, Grace embraced a new role she cherished most—grandmother. She often said, “If I knew how much fun it was going to be to have grandkids, I would have had them first.”
Grace will be remembered for her warmth, humor, creativity, and generous heart. Her legacy of love and perseverance lives on in all who were blessed to know her.
She is survived by her husband, Philip Slack, Sr.; two sons, Philip Slack, Jr. and Jonathan Slack (Heather); and four grandchildren, Jonathan, Chloe, Henry, and Isabella.
