What can I say? So much, but just this though. I had the privilege to call her Gram even though I wasn't hers. They say it takes a village to raise a child, well she was a village. Whenever we waltzed into her home to say hi she always asked us: are you ok? Are you doing well in school? Staying out of trouble? Are you hungry? (Can't emphasize that last one enough). I never left her presence: sad, without help, advice, or tutoring, wanting to be a good kid so I wouldn't disappoint her, and never ever hungry. She was a special person. I'm so blessed to have known her. We will miss her greatly. I'm glad you let me be a part of your extended family all these years. Love you guys.

Shirley Schmidt (nee Hoddinott).
Shirley Schmidt, 90, a resident of Smith Crossing in Orland Park, and formerly of Palos Heights, Illinois, Fort Myers, Florida, and Hinsdale, Illinois, died peacefully on Tuesday, December 18, 2018,
with her husband at her side. Born to Bertram J and Gladys B.Hoddinott, she married John Edward Schmidt, an Army veteran and an account executive at IBM, in Chicago. The couple remained married
for the next seven decades and until her passage into eternal life. Shirley and John began their married life in the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago, but quickly relocated to Hinsdale, where they
lived for nearly thirty years, and raised four children. Shirley was an avid golfer, a founding member of the Hinsdale international Gourmet Society, and gave over 2000 hours of volunteer
service to the Hinsdale Sanitarium and Hospital. With John, Shirley traveled and golfed around the world. The couple's travels took them to Hawaii, Central America, Alaska, Australia & New
Zealand, Europe, and Asia, and resulted in a series of wonderful letters that chronicled her adventures. Shirley's parents preceded her into eternal life, as did her sister Joan (Joseph
Lantzy) Eckhardt. In addition to John, she is survived by her siblings Bertram (Barbara) Hoddinott, Jr., and Carolyn Hoddinott; her four children; her six grandchildren; and her 11
great-grandchildren, as well as many friends and cousins, here and abroad. Shirley's family gives special thanks and recognition to the Smith Crossing family for the wonderful care they
provided to Shirley over the past 6 years, and to Great Lakes Caring for the compassion and care they provided over the past several months. Memorial Visitation Saturday, December 29th from 10 a.m.
